Duties
and Qualifications of a Mayor
Manner
of Election
Elected at large
by all qualified voters in the city or municipality where he intends to be
elected.
Term of Office
Each term shall be three years; maximum of three consecutive terms.
Qualifications
A citizen of
the Philippines.
At least twenty-three (23) years of age on election day for candidates in
highly-urbanized cities; or at least twenty-one (21) years of age on
election day for candidates in independent component cities, component
cities and municipalities.
Able to read
and write Filipino or any other local language or dialect.
A registered voter in the city or municipality where he intends to be
elected.
A resident in
the city of municipality where he intends to be elected for at least one
(1) year before election day.
Primary Duties
- Act as the
chief executive of the city or municipality which elected him.
- Has power
to veto any ordinance or resolution passed by the Sangguniang
Panlungsod or Sangguniang Bayan.
- Exercise
general supervision and control over all programs, projects, services,
and activities of the city or municipal government.
- Enforce
all laws and ordinances relative to the governance of the city or
municipality.
- Implement
all approved policies, programs, projects, services and activities of
the city or municipality and exercise its corporate powers under R.A.
No. 7160.
- Initiate
and maximize the generation of resources and revenues, and apply the
same to the implementation of development plans, program objectives
and priorities of the city or municipality, particularly those
resources and revenues programmed for agro-industrial development and
country-wide growth and progress.
- Ensure the
delivery of basic services and the provision of adequate facilities.
- Exercise
such other powers and perform such other duties and functions as may
be prescribed by law or ordinance.
- Upon
assumption of office, make a full disclosure of financial and business
interests in accordance with R.A. No. 6713 and other related laws.
- Disclose
any business, financial, or professional relationship or any relation
by affinity or consanguinity within the fourth civil degree, which he
may have with any person, firm, or entity doing business with the city
or municipality.
